Kings Dev Camp: Detailed Black v White scrimmage notes

Throughout the day today at Kings Development Camp I tweeted various notes from the scrimmage and quotes from several players.

For those who like a little more detail, below is a semi-thorough recap. Special thanks and a major stick tap to Scott Coffman of The Fourth Period for the assist here:

First Period Highlights

Team Black started Martin Jones in net and Team White went with Matej Machovsky (camp invitee from Brampton, OHL)...Team Black also includes Tyler Toffoli, Linden Vey, Michael Schumacher, Derek Forbort, Andrew Campbell and Nic Deslauriers...Team White also includes Jordan Weal, Ray Kaunisto, Brandon Kozun, Nic Dowd, Nick Shore, Jake Muzzin and Kevin Gravel.

Michael Kantor rocks Gravel, who skates back to the bench very slowly...Team Black is on the board first when Toffoli scores...it looked like a missed play by defenseman Alex Roach, allowing Toffoli to bang home a jam play...minutes later Machovsky makes a big save on a breakaway against Toffoli, don't think Toffoli got the shot he wanted...half way through the first period and it's all Team Black, very little offensive pressure from Team White.

Windsor Spitfires forward Jeff Brown scores with a nice shot, putting Team Black up 2-0. Coach Karl Taylor had to be smiling, as he'd be a good recruit for the Ontario Reign...it wasn't really a good goal for Machovsky to give up, he was beat low blocker.

Muzzin is a step ahead of everybody on the ice...Kantor continues to impress with his physical play and general hustle - always seems to be involved in the play...Muzzin starts to cover Toffoli late in the period, including rubbing him out in the corner.

Team White finally gets the puck in deep during the final two minutes - Jones almost got caught napping and the ref waived off what looked like a goal, Robbie Czarnik knocked it in with a high stick though, so good call. Final flurry also includes Schumacher right in front of Jones all alone, yet he couldn't sneak one by him.

Second Period Highlights

Chris Gibson takes over in net for Team Black and Mike Morrison (camp invitee from Kitchner, OHL) now in goal for Team White...Jordan Nolan had a mini one-on-one with Morrison and didn't get a shot off...we almost had our first fight when Andy Andreoff and Colin Miller start mixing it up at one end while all the other players were down in other zone, they smack each other's sticks around, but no punches were thrown.

Adam Brown now in goal for Team White halfway through the second period (he's a camp invitee from Kelowna, WHL)...at the other end, Roach scores on a fluttering shot...Gibson may not have seen it or it took a weird bounce, 2-1 Black.

Gibson comes back and stones Shore on a breakaway, Shore went forehand-backhand and Gibson stayed with him ...Czarnik is also robbed by Gibson from three feet out...then minutes later Shore scores a beauty to tie it up...it was a bad line change by Team Black, leading to a two-on-one...Shore kept the puck and beat Gibson top shelf, glove side...2-2 with 7:40 left.

Roach is playing very physical out there...Deslauries makes a nice passing play with Mersch and (maybe) Lowry, big save by Brown...Kaunisto fires one off the post from the slot area...Nolan has a good chance, but he's also stopped...Team White has found their rhythm...they score again when David Eddy capitalizes on another awful line change by Team Black - it was a two-on-zero for Team White.

Penalty on Team White - no power play though, all penalties result in a penalty shot...Rob Mignardi skates right down the center with speed and scores for Team Black, making it 3-3...and that's how it ended.

Scott also posted some rough video of the final goal here.

In closing, it's a scrimmage...in July!  Overall, none of the above means much.  So, please don't read into anything just quite yet.  Do everybody a favor and don't go 'hockey crazy' - nobody earned or lost a roster spot today.

Post game comments from Martin Jones are up here, more to follow from other players.

The second and final scrimmage will be at 9:30 am on Tuesday, sandwiched in between the 8 am and 10:45 one-hour drill sessions. If you can't make it down to TSC, I'll have notes throughout the day on twitter and facebook.
